Character: Ashelia B'nargin Dalmasca (Ashe)
Canon: Final Fantasy XII, Post-Game
Age: 19-20ish
Background Information: Wiki link.
Personality:
1) Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.
Ashe is a woman who has lost everything except for her convictions. Ashe is determined to hold to those convictions, deeming them at the core of her identity. She is polite, formal, and resolute, and she wears that resolve like armor. She will ferociously being controlled by anyone, and she is unwilling to compromise her freedom for power or political gain, something many of her enemies simply do not understand.
Anyone who meets her will doubtless notice that she is not a talkative person, even when she's warmed up, though she is friendly and kind to the people she deems favorable. This may make her seem cold or closed off, and that isn't necessarily wrong. When she does speak, it is formally, as an educated noble-woman. The way she carries herself and the way she speaks is what actually gives her away to other characters when she is trying to maintain a disguise. She comes across as confident, if a touch rash, and talking to her a bit will probably reveal a deep-seated morass of both grief and resentment at her lot in life. Ashe does not come across as a happy person most of the time, really.
She's confident and disciplined as well, but both of these things crack when she is faced with visible reminders of her grief. Thinking of Rasler, her dead husband, or of the hurts visited upon her people will send her into a melancholic spiral or cause her to lash out in frustration if she's questioned over much.
2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?
Ashe's primary motivation is to regain what was lost to her, and to ensure that nothing like it will ever happen again. For context, her homeland was absolutely devastated by war on a scale never seen before by an Imperial power. Her initial motivation is revenge on the Empire, and she is pushed right to the brink of using an unnatural power to completely destroy it. This goal changes when she realizes that would mean compromising her ideals, and those of her forebears. "Even with power we cannot change what is passed. What is done is done," she says when challenged on her decision.
With that epiphany she instead refocuses on freeing her kingdom from Imperial control and creating a homeland that can ensure safety for its people. This includes freedom from manipulation by the Occuria, secretive and godlike beings that have manipulated events for centuries. Her determination to not be controlled by others informed this goal, reinforcing this goal and giving her the strength to reject power when offered.
She is also seeking justice against the people who have wronged her, but she wishes that justice to be on her own terms and not as dictated by others. This driving need for self-determination for herself and her people is really her core driving force.
3) What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
Ashe's biggest flaw is her resentment, but other (related) ones are rage, bitterness, and rashness. She is someone who is deeply aggrieved, and this bitterness informs a great deal of her decisions and is the source of her rash and wrathful temperament. She is prone to fits of righteous indignation when she is asked to compromise, and she will stubbornly dig in her heels all the more. It also makes her come across as brooding, and harsh to others, which isn't good for politics. Some other characters treat her temper as a liability, further highlighting this as a problem for her.
This attitude leads her to make many, many rash decisions, especially early in the canon. Perhaps the one she most regrets is that her challenge of Imperial authority results in the deaths of many innocent pilgrims and travelers on Mt. Bur-Omisace. This is the time that we see her most visibly shaken by events, and it does lead her to start making better calls, though her anger is still an undercurrent throughout the rest of the story.
4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
Ashe places a great deal of importance on her forebears, and draws a lot of her inspiration for how to carry herself from percieved notions of how her progenitors acted. In her big climactic refutation of the Occuria, she states "In all Dalmasca's long history, not once did we rely on the Dusk Shard. Our people resolved ne'er to use it, though our need may be great." She also states several times that she desires to hold herself in accordance with the values of the Dynast King, her primogenitor, and to rule and act as kings and queens of old Dalmasca did.
I personally find this interest in her percieved and her desire to break away from it by pushing against the Occuria, who have used tradition to manipulate mankind to be something fun in her character!
Abilities & Inventory:
Combat Skill: Ashe, being a JRPG character, is a dangerous close-quarters fighter and her preference is towards using melee weapons. I've traditionally given her a preference for using swords, both 1 and 2 handed, and shields. Ashe also has a few Technicks. These are combat maneuvers like Wither or Shear that give small debuffs status effects.
Small Group Leadership: Ashe worked with and led both an underground cell of resistance fighters and a ragtag group of JRPG protagonists against a much larger, better equipped force. She knows a lot about guerrilla tactics, sneaking in, and small-group combat tactics.
Education: Ashe is fairly highly educated for someone from a steam-punk medieval world. Perks of being royalty!
Magicks: Ashe has a not insignificant knowledge of spellcasting. She primarily knows Black, Arcane, and Time Magick. So things like Thudaga, Slow/Haste, and status effects like Toxify or Sleep. Standard Final Fantasy magic stuff.
Espers: Ashe has the ability to summon Espers, basically demons that are bound into service to people who defeat them. They reside in magical glyphs branded onto the bearer a bit like tattoos. Ashe has two she can summon: Belias the fire giant, and Adrammelech, a weird thunder-goat thing. They function as temporary and extremely draining things that don't last very long but work with Ashe.
Inventory
1) The Treaty Blade.
2) Durandal
3) Aegis Shield
4) A change of clothes
5) A Nethecite Shard, a now-inert formerly magic stone.

Corsairs: The way Ashe values of freedom and self-determination so highly makes me think of the Corsairs first. She spent years working as an underground rebel, and operated with an RPG party against an extremely rigid governmental structure like the Empire. She has a strong sense of order but it is wrapped up in a deeply personal code, and I feel like she would rankle at being part of an organization like the Paladins. She wants to make her own structure, and not be a part of someone else's. There's also a desire to stake a claim and jump into a brave new world and carve out a place where she and those like her can find freedom and happiness also makes me feel like the Corsairs would be where she would do best.
